What a higher moisture reading may mean
A consistent pattern near a hardware penetration, impact area, failed joint, or visible repair may support concern about water intrusion. The surveyor considers whether the pattern corresponds with cracking, corrosion, movement, staining, changed percussion tone, or other observable evidence.
Possible recommendations may include removing and rebedding hardware, opening a limited area for repair-yard evaluation, allowing a structure to dry, obtaining infrared or ultrasonic evaluation, or having a qualified fiberglass technician perform invasive testing.
Important: Standard marine surveys are normally non-destructive. Drilling, core sampling, laminate removal, and removal of permanently installed components require separate authorization and should be performed by an appropriate repair professional.
Where moisture problems are often investigated
Deck Hardware
Cleats, rails, stanchions, windlasses, deck fills, snaps, and other fastened equipment.
Hatches and Ports
Frames, windows, companionways, access panels, and openings where sealant can deteriorate.

What buyers should do with moisture findings
Do not rely on a single verbal reading or assume every elevated response requires major reconstruction. Ask where readings were taken, what reference areas were used, whether surface conditions could have affected the instrument, and what other evidence supports the conclusion.
A clear survey report should identify the location, describe the observable condition, explain relevant limitations, and recommend a reasonable next step. That information can help a buyer estimate additional investigation, negotiate repairs, adjust expectations, or decide not to proceed.

Can a moisture meter tell exactly how much water is inside a fiberglass boat?

Can moisture testing be performed while the boat is in the water?
