Selecting A Surveyor?
When choosing a marine surveyor, it’s important to work with someone who meets the highest industry standards. At Classic Yacht Marine Surveyors, our professionals maintain active membership in leading accrediting organizations, including ABYC, NFPA, and follow USCG guidelines. These credentials ensure we uphold strict technical, ethical, and professional standards.
By working with our certified surveyors, you’ll receive a detailed, lender- and insurer-accepted report covering your vessel’s condition, performance, and fair market value. Whether you’re buying, selling, or securing insurance, our surveys are trusted across the marine industry for their accuracy and thoroughness.
Timeline For Your Pre-Purchase Survey?
Every boat survey is unique. Factors like the vessel’s size, condition, location, and systems all affect the scope of the inspection. That said, the on-site inspection is typically completed within a few hours, with minimal disruption to the seller or broker.
For a more accurate estimate based on your specific vessel, we’ll go over timing and expectations during your initial consultation. Our goal is to deliver a thorough, timely report so you can move forward with confidence.
How You Should Prepare For Your Survey.
It’s important to know that the surveyor is not responsible for preparing the vessel—that responsibility lies with the owner or buyer arranging the survey. Proper preparation helps ensure a thorough, efficient inspection and accurate report.
Here’s what needs to be in place before the survey:
-
Clean & Clear Access: The vessel should be clean and free of clutter, gear, or personal items that might block access to key areas like bilges, engine spaces, or structural components.
-
Haul-Out (If Applicable): If a bottom inspection has been requested, you’ll need to schedule a haul-out with a local boatyard. The hull should be cleaned prior to the survey so that any blisters, damage, or wear are visible.
-
Sea Trial Coordination: For surveys that include a sea trial, the owner is responsible for providing a qualified captain to operate the vessel. The surveyor cannot run the boat while conducting the inspection.
-
Plan Ahead: All logistics—dock access, haul-out timing, sea trial captain, and payment arrangements—should be finalized prior to the scheduled survey to avoid delays.
How the Propulsion Package is Surveyed?
During a pre-purchase marine survey, we perform a visual inspection of the vessel’s propulsion system as part of the overall assessment. This typically includes observing engine performance during a sea trial, and checking the condition of components such as belts, hoses, mounts, stringers, pumps, and surrounding systems.
However, it’s important to note that we are not certified engine surveyors. If a full engine analysis is required, it is the buyer’s responsibility to hire a manufacturer-certified technician. These professionals use proprietary diagnostic tools and have specialized training to evaluate engine internals, including compression tests and electronic scans—capabilities that go beyond the scope of a standard marine survey.
We do offer oil sample spectro-analysis as an optional service. These tests provide valuable insight into the condition of an engine or gearbox, and results are typically available within one week. Many buyers find this to be a cost-effective way to gain deeper understanding of the propulsion system’s health.
